plans on surfing again as soon as he's healed. president obama and republican candidate mitt romney got their campaigns back in full swing today. they'll hit several key states as they try and shore up support with the election just five days away. president obama is in green bay wisconsin at this hour. he's on a 24-hour whirlwind tour. criss-crossing the country to campaign in the swing states of wisconsin, nevada, colorado and ohio. republican mitt romney is making three campaign stops in the swing state of virginia today. he told supporters the country's economic troubles will not improve under another term with president obama. congressman jesse jackson junior will not be released from the mayo clinic before election day. jackson has already voted by absentee ballot and has no plans for a public appearance on election night. jackson was recently re-admitted to the clinic for treatment of bi-polar disorder. he also suffers from gastro- intestinal problems. he has not campaigned since taking a medical leave of absence in june. next we go live to the new york stock exchange. how some f

to republicans they say absolutely we're going antoine it. there's a lot more enthusiasm for mitt romney than there's been before. who am i to believe? >> nobody. i think the one thing that is true about ohio is that it's atypical in the sense that the president is doing badly amongst white men and white working-class men in particular around the country. although romney has been eroding the slight advantage here in ohio with white working class men, what helps the president here is that bailout of the auto industry because that is helping him with his key demographics. so if it really in the end is about ohio and the 18 votes here, then it may be that something has distorted the race here and helped the president. but nobody yet really even dares to call it. the one thing that both sides are saying very clearly is that early voting is very important. a quarter of the state has already voted and half may have vote bid polling day itself. traditionally early voting is the democrats, but this time rms have been working very hard on -- republicans have been working very hard on it, too. >> laura

the republicans are withstanding the attacks on the ryan budget, the medicare attacks, but governor romney would like that lead among older, more reliable, more republican voters to be a little bit bigger than 52-46. that's one thing he needs to work on. this is significant. like in michigan, the auto bailout plays big in ohio and look at this. you might say the president's only getting 41% of white men, 46% of white women. that's actually a good number. if the president can keep above 40% among whites overall and above 40% among white men, it's pretty much game over in the electorate. this is a statistic we will watch as we get closer to election day. if the president is above 40 among whites, especially above 40 among white men, in most states he would be well on his path to victory. you siee this more and more in industrial states affected by the auto bailout, the president runs stronger among white men. if that poll were to hold up, can governor romney get to 270 without ohio and how much easier is it for the president to get to 270 with ohio? let's start with the president. he's at 237 righ

in the pick for president. here's the main reason right here. governor romney gets the republicans. the president gets the democrats but at the moment, in our survey, the president has a narrow lead among ohio voters who define themselves as independents. that is the battleground in a big battleground state, if you win the independents you are likely to win. governor romney close but the president with an important edge among independent voters. there's also an age divide, if you look at likely voters in ohio. among voters under the age of 50, there's a big gap, 18 point lead for the president among voters under the age of 50. a smaller lead for governor romney among voters 50 and older so the republicans are withstanding the attacks on the ryan budget, the medicare attacks, but governor romney would like that lead among older, more reliable, more republican voters to be a little bit bigger than 52-46. that's one thing he needs to work on. this is significant. like in michigan, the auto bailout plays big in ohio and look at this. you might say the president's only getting 41% of wh

with senators from four key swing states. republican rob portman of ohio, who played president romney in the debate represent and 18 electoral votes are in play en a state obama won in '08, by 4.6 points and now leads 2.3 points in the latest real clear politics average of recent polls and republican ron johnson of wisconsin, 10 electoral votes at stake and obama won by almost 14 points, last time, and, is now leading by 2.3. and democrat mark wa of virginia, obama won its 13 electoral votes by 6 points, four years ago and now is tied with romney. and, democrat mark udall of colorado, obama won the 9 electoral votes last time by nine points and the race there is now dead even. senator portman, let's start with the state i guess most people think may decide the race, that is ohio. the obama camp says they have the big edge in early voting in your state and also note that they have 137 campaign offices around the country, and the romney camp has only 39. >> well, chris, first of all, you mentioned the real clear politics average in ohio, 2.3%, in the president's favor and now it is 1.9%

that obama keeps talking about. that's what mitt romney and republicans have been saying and i think women are starting to believe it. >> bill: so are you saying that women's health care that abortion, that contraception, that child care, those are all distractions? >> that's not what i'm saying. that's what the [ inaudible ] are saying. every time one of those issues is brought up, they don't want to answer it the question you see it with mitt romney his campaign comes back and says don't even worry about his birth control views, he wants employers to decide. but this is not a big deal women care about the economy. and they said that with abortion, they have tried to gloss over his running mate's more extreme abortion position by saying women don't care about this, and what i'm saying is it must be working because women are slowly crawling back over towards myth -- >> bill: towards mitt romney and i know you are reporting on what we have been told that the polls show. i find that absolutely impossible to believe, because i think american women are smarter than tha

vote. one thing that i will say about the romney campaign, the republicans more in general they learned from their mistakes four years ago. they've been out since may you know gathering data, trying to connect with people. they boast their door-knocking operation although it's hard to quantify how many doors you've actually knocked on. they say they've knocked on over 1 million to 2 million doors in this cycle. it will be interesting to see what the final tally. it's important to note that this weekend you can go and vote in person at the board of elections. this is something that the democrats, the obama campaign fought for heavily. they sued the state of ohio to reopen this window that was available in 2008. it was closed last year, and now it's back open, you're seeing a lot of activity surrounding a lot of local churches labor groups driving people to vote in person. >> jennifer: we're also watching the backlash from the jeep ad which the cleveland dealer was admonishing governor romney about. that's henry gomez from the cleveland. the president won the rocky mountain state in 2008.

. republican mitt romney will campaign today out of the storm's path in the battleground state of ohio yesterday offering these words for those in sandy's way. >> i think that right now some people in the country are a little nervous about a storm about to hit the coast, and our thoughts and prayers are with the people that find themselves in harm's way. >> what remains to be seen is how this october surprise will impact an election that is now just eight days away with early voting already under way. we want to get straight to the latest update, and for that nbc news meteorologist dillon drier joins me with a look. not much has changed? >> that's unfortunate. it is still a strong category 1 hurricane at this time, and even if it changes into something post-tropical as it makes its way towards the new jersey coastline, this is a strange hybrid between a once tropical system, a hurricane right now, and then transforming and taking on more of the characteristics of a nor'easter. this makes this an unprecedented type of storm. it starts as a hurricane and developing into this nor'easter.

even republicans i've talked to in this state have said that mitt romney and ohio -- >> well, republicans feel like they're going after a wider swath of vote erts. they feel like they're going after not just their core, their base, but they're looking at disenchanted obama voters and they say they ever targeted them, they know where they are and they think that gives them the edge. >> and switch and that's what a lot of their advertising has been focused on. but in wisconsin, i don't know, there was just a new state poll by one of the papers in wisconsin that showed obama up by eight. now, that's probably on the high end, but there's not any real concern right now in the obama camp that they're in danger of losing wisconsin. they're sending the president there just to try and nail it down because they don't want to leave any stone unturned. but right now, you get a sense of growing confidence in the obama camp. they feel like they're going to be okay. >> well, and here is the reason why. of all these battleground states, the president needs to win just three in order to win a

of leaders around the state to were working very hard for mitt romney in the republican team right now. we have nine offices around the state. we have made three times as many phone calls and six times as many doors be a knock on in 2012 than we did in 2008. we are undergoing extremely voter contact. we have made over 1 million unique boater contract -- context in new hampshire. these are all grass roots that we run. we're calling our friends and neighbors and asking for the vote. in democratic calller, you're up. >> thank you for taking my call. i've a question and comment. my comments will be i think everyone is being very unfair to the way president obama handled libya that has not been investigated fully. no one speaks about the intelligent plunder the republicans did that put us into war with iraq, lost 2000 american soldiers, and the answer was we had poor intelligence. my question is, why should anyone believe mitt romney would be good at creating jobs while he was 48 in job creation massachusetts? i will take the second question first. mitt romney has created jobs. he is in the mid

remarks he made about disaster relief funding. at a republican primary debate last year romney down played the federal government's role in disaster response. >> every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states that's the right direction. it can go further and send it back to the private sector that's even better. >> with the campaign in its final days and superstorm sandy dominating the headlines, it could pounce for the president's campaign. >> it's tailor made for a campaign ad even though politics have been off the table the last several days i wouldn't be surprised to see an outside group on the democratic side come out and say if not directly the obama campaign itself. >> on wednesday romney issue ad statement in which he said fema played a key role during times of disaster. as president i will ensure fema has the funding it need to fulfill its mission while directing maximum resources to the first responders who work tirelessly to help those in need because states and localities are in the best position to get aid to the in

, someone who is a republican, former republican governor, and certainly a surrogate for the romney campaign, but harsh words, especially given what the president was doing yesterday. >> yeah, i think that's true. and governor bush has not been the most hot eyed partisan among significant republican players in the past. this that is all hands on deck moment where surrogates are asked to do this kind of stuff. i thought the most unhelpful thing from the romney standpoint in that common, which not the harshness in terms of president obama you want to talk about george w. bush? that really for swing voters, undecided voters you want the image -- >> to remind them of hurricane katrina, bush? >> it's not effective surrogacy, apart -- forget about the harshness. >> romney was nastier to bush in the debate than obama was. >> by the way, jeb bush, the whole uniting at this time? jeb bush, maybe one of his -- >> craig fugate a republican would not work for george w. bush after katrina. but when obama called him he said yes because they were serious about professionalizing -- >> there's the door. >> t

@ktvu.com. you will find more there including fan slide shows. >>> now, election 2012 coverage. republican presidential nominee, romney, spent the day in iowa talking about the economy. there he told supporters that president barack obama has only quote made the problem worse. >> the president's campaign slogan is this, forward. but for 23 million americans trying to find a job these past four years feel more like backward. >>> for the democrats, joe biden hit the trail today while president barack obama spent the day in washington, d.c. >> it is always america is in decline. i got news for them. romney and ryan are -- america is not in decline you are in denial. >> biden at a rally in keep oshaa, wisconsin. the polls have the -- kenosha, wisconsin. the polls have barack obama ahead in wisconsin. >>> bay area community college is showing students how they will be effected if they fail to pass an ordinance. the classes highlighted in red will only be offered if proposition 30 passes next month. if it fails the district says it will have to cut about 100 classes at the classes in livermore i
